CIBC World Markets economists have forecasted that the Canadian dollar will be at par with the US dollar by the end of the year, reports the Canadian Press (CP).

The Canadian dollar has hit a 30 year high versus the American dollar, with the current exchange rate hovering at $.09448. The last time the Canadian dollar was worth as much as the US dollar was back in November, 1976.

While the stronger dollar benefits the purchasing power of Canadian consumers, tourism (from the US) and the manufacturing sector are struggling with the weaker US currency.

The NBA Toronto Raptors have won their first Divisional title, after defeating Orlando coupled with a New Jersey loss to Chicago.

The Raptors currently have the 3rd of 8 seeds for the Eastern Conference playoffs. If they can maintain their position for the remaining six games they will have home court advantage for the first playoff round against the 6th seed team, currently an injured plagued Washington team.

The rapid rise of the the Raptors after many dismal and embarrassing seasons was not expected. The hopes for most fans was to improve on last seasons 27 wins, and hopefully sneak into the playoffs. The current situation is better than the best case scenario that most fans could have realistically anticipated.

With great success, comes great expectations. The complete retooling and change of atmosphere and structure of the organization has many fans now expecting a perennial contending team.

And with Toronto Maple Leafs struggling to make the playoffs, the Toronto Raptors hope to make in roads in capturing the hearts and minds, and a larger fan base in a hockey mad town.

Cick here for Photos of Toronto Raptors vs Los Angeles Lakers Photos

As huge NBA basketball fans, we took our camera to the Toronto Raptors game vs the Los Angeles Lakers today at the Air Canada Centre.

The Toronto Raptors have suffered some very tough times over the past few years, but have turned it around in the 2006/2007 season with the arrival of former Pheonix Suns General Manager, Bryan Colangelo.

Colangelo, former NBA Executive of the Year who built the Pheonix Suns into the NBA's most exciting team and a perennial championship contender, re-constructed the Raptors organization in the off season.

One of his first moves was to hire European basketball mind Maurizio Gherardini as Raptors VP & Assistant GM. Gherardini was the general manager of Italy’s Benetton Treviso, where among many of his accolades, won 4 European Cups, 7 Italian Cups and crafted a scouting system that was the envy in Europe.

Colangelo followed the European influence by drafting Andrea Bargnani number 1 overall in the NBA draft. The seven foot Italian played under Gherardini with Benetton.

A total of nine new players were added in the off season - Bargnani (Europe), Anthony Parker (Europe), Uros Slokar(Europe), Jorge Garbajosa (Europe)Fred Jones, Kris Humphries, PJ Tucker, TJ Ford, and Rasho Nesterovic.

With all the turnover and the teams history of mismanagement (which culminated in the trade of Vince Carter for neglible players), many of the experts were not expecting much from the Toronto Raptors this year.

However, the Raptors lead the Atlantic Division with a 27-23 record, and currently hold down the 4th out of 8 playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto basketball fans are buzzing with excitement at the prospect of playoff basketball once again in Toronto.

January 19,2007: Yonge Street lights up

Yonge Street Lights up

At TheFurnishedStay.com, one of our passions is to present to you a sense of the urban fabric of downtown Toronto.

This night video we took on January 19,2007 is of the new lights on the Arcade Building (137 Yonge Street), located on the east side of Yonge Street where Temeperance Street ends.

The lights were ironically added around December 2006, during the
Cavalcade of Lights, a holiday tradition that dates back 40 years.

The long vertical bars of lights, change colours and patterns, lighting and livening up what once was a dark and quiet section of Yonge Street.

The addition of lights on the Arcade building is quite dramatic for Toronto. It's something that really has not been seen in the city: large displays of light serving only as a function of loud, peacocking decoration.

Some see it as a waste of energy and some see it as "tacky", and some see it as the next step for the growth of Yonge Street, and downtown Toronto.

The illumination of Yonge Street as a tunnel of light which turns night to day, began some time ago, as bright LCD screens, side building flood lights and back and front lit advertising banners, started to appear one by one along Yonge Street from Gerrard to Adelaide.

The upcoming arrival of Metropolis, Toronto's version on Times Square, aims to be the beacon of all lights, for the Yonge Street strip.

The Globe and Mail today reports that the Toronto Trump Hotel & Condominium has announced a construction start date of Spring 2007.

The 70 story hotel and condominium, with 291 hotel suites and 147 condo units, will be the tallest residential building in Canada. The hotel will operate a similar investing plan as One King West, with owners able to rent out their fully furnished units into the hotel rental program.

The Globe quotes Barry Landsberg, Toronto director of marketing for Trump International saying "There's no turning back".

The Trump announcement comes on the heels of some key developments within the core:

  • the completed deconstruction of the Bay Adelaide Centre to make way for a large new multi tower office complex. The Bay Adelaide Centre is located directly across the street from the Trump Hotel and Condo site.

  • the ground breaking of the Ritz Carlton Hotel/Condominium the entertainment district

  • the construction of a sales office for the Four Seasons hotel in Yorkville

  • the completion of the skeletal body of the Metropolis shopping complex in Dundas Square.

Back in May 2006, in our Article Toronto 2010: Part 1, Hospitality and Hotels, we mentioned at the time that many of the proposed five star hotels were not sure things.

Half a year later, three of the four hotels have made significant progress and are on track to open in 2010, with only one, Shangri-La, still in the proposal phase.

Porter Airlines, the upstart airline flying out of the downtown Toronto Island airport, is considering New York as a possible flying destination as early as Spring of 2007, reports the National Post.

Porter Airlines, which started running flights from Toronto to Ottawa in October 2006, plan to add Montreal as a destination in December 2006.

Porter Airlines is relying heavily on travellers who require quick commutes from the downtown Toronto core. Traditionally, travellers located in downtown Toronto have to travel to Mississauga (a suburb of Toronto) which can cost approximately $50 including tip for a taxi ride, and can take anywhere from 20 minutes to more than an hour depending on traffic. Traffic going in and out of the downtown core can be unpredictable based on the time of day, as well as weather and accidents.

However, residences who live along the Lake Ontario waterfront condominiums and environmental activist groups oppose the idea of airport expansion.

Toronto Island Airport

After much controversy, the first flight from new carrier Porter Airlines departed from the Toronto Island Airport to Ottawa this morning at 7:00AM.

The Toronto Island Aiport, also known as the Toronto Centre City Airport is located on an island minutes away from the downtown core.

Its proponents point to the convenience of the location of the airport. The island airport saves downtown central business commuters time and hassles versus the congested, and suburban located Pearson International Airport, which is the main airport of Toronto.

Its opponents point to the environmental impact, noise, and safety issues with having an airport so close to the waterfront of downtown.

In a recent mayoral election, David Miller campaigned against the airport, specifically against the creation of a fixed link from the island to the mainland. David Miller won partly on his opposition against the airport.

Will Toronto Film Studios be redeveloped into a Wal-Mart bigbox super store? The first of it's kind in the core of Toronto?

According to the Toronto Star, that is what soon could happen if developer Mitch Goldar has his way.

Toronto Film Studios is located in the heart of the studio district in downtown Toronto, minutes away from the Don Valley Parkway (the major north-south highway servicing downtown Toronto to the northern suburbs).

Last year, Toronto Film Studios, the largest film studio in Toronto, won a bid to build a mega studio called the Filmport on derilict and contaminated port lands, located lakeside in east downtown Toronto.

When the Filmport is completed, Toronto Film Studios will leave behind 7.4 hectares of prime industrial land ideally located in downtown Toronto.

Mitch Goldar who first brought Walmart to Canada has recently purchased a 50% stake in the "old" Toronto Film Studios land, hoping to re-develop it into a superstore with mixed residental when Toronto Film Studios vacates the property.

Today's online travel section of CNN posted a nice article about tourism in Toronto.

Included in the article is a suggested 3 day itinerary of Toronto which highlights some of Toronto's most famous tourist attractions, including the CN Tower and the Toronto Islands.

The article has a lot of complimentary things to say about Toronto: the United Nations proclaiming Toronto to be the world's most multicultual city and mentioning Toronto to be a "supremely walkable city".

We love Toronto and we make every effort to promote it, but it is always nice to hear about our city from others as well, especially when it is linked off the front page of CNN.

Canada recorded it's ninth straight budget surplus, the only G8 nation to currently to do so, with a budget surplus of $13.2 billion for fiscal year 2005/2006.

The budget surpluses started with the Liberal government nine years ago. The Conservatives took power in 2006, and aim to continue fiscal responsibility. However, the Conversatives hope to cut high taxes and forecast budgets that are closer to the bottom line.

Canada's federal debt is now at $481.5 billion (from $494.7 billion in 2005), 35.1% of the gross domestic product, its lowest ratio since 1981-82, the government said.

Toronto's residential market for newly built condominiums is tops in North America. According to the Toronto Star, the most recent figures for the year 2005, shows Toronto sold over 17,000 new condos. Toronto is outpacing Miami (7,500), Chicago (6,800), and New York (6,450).

Residential condominiums are the back bone of the furnished rental market in Toronto. The majority of buildings in the furnished rental market comes from residential condominiums. (Note that in Canada, the term condominium is exclusively used to define a building where uints in a high rise building are owned by a buyer, and an apartment is almost exclsively used to define a rental high rise building with one building owner).

Unlike the previous 3 parts of this series (Hospitality/Hotels, Arts and Entertainment, Office and Retail ) we will not profile specific properties for there are far too many. (Click here for a list of downtown Toronto condominiums in various stages of development).

Rather, we will discuss some of the various factors: low interest rates, a booming national and local economy, aggressive immigration and population growth, value, available land, and foreign investment, which makes Toronto current condomium market growth #1 in North America.

We've added a map of 25 downtown Toronto hotels to our website. Click here to see the map.

This is the map of the locations from our Downtown Toronto hotel list that we added to our website last week.

Although our primary focus of our website is to provide information about furnished apartments and short and long term corporate accommodations, many times travellers choose hotels instead. Many hotels as well try to cater to the furnished rental market by providing discounts for extended stays (usually for periods over a month).

We recommend that you compare the prices and services between both products, furnished rentals and hotels.

You will generally find cheaper prices and more home like features (i.e. kitchen, washer and dryer) with a furnished apartment than you will with a hotel, and if you have had to stay away on a temporary basis away from home before, you will know how quickly such things can make a big difference.

We have added a new list to our website, the Downtown Toronto Hotel List.

One of our central themes to our website is that sometimes too much information can be both confusing and time consuming when seeking accommodations. There are many lists and directories of hotels for Toronto on the web, that do a great job of listing all the hotels in Toronto, however, if you aren't from Toronto, or do not know much about the city, staying in Mississauga or Thornhill (suburbs on Toronto which require car commutes) is much different than staying in the city.

Our Downtown Toronto Hotel List focuses only on these hotels that are with in the downtown city core. The hotels on our list are located in or close to one of the following central downtown Toronto districts: Financial District, Entertainment District, Yorkville, St Lawrence, Eaton Centre/Dundas Square.

We look to expand our Downtown Toronto Hotel List to add more details and features. Stay tuned!

In Part III of Toronto 2010: The city in 3.5 years, we examine the changes that will occur in the and office and retail sectors.

The last major attempt at expanding the commercial/office sector of downtown Toronto failed with the 1989 crash of the real estate market. It was then, a prime piece of land located in the heart of the financial district at Bay and Adelaide was under construction for a major 50 story office tower. What remains on the land is a 12 story block of cement, the foundation of an elevator shaft which was all that was completed.

Bay Adelaide Centre

Eerily, the incomplete structure looks like a gigantic tombstone and for the longest time the site symbolized the Toronto commercial market, a graveyard. Many believed that Toronto could not sustain another major office tower, in other words, the commercial base had peaked. Some even called it a jinx, as several attempts in the late 90's to resurrect the project failed.

A few years ago Toronto finally got back to the same real estate prices of 1989. The residential market in Toronto has been healthy for a long while now, but it is only until recently that the commerical market has woken up from its nightmare.

Doors Open Toronto

Quoting directly from the doorsopen.org website:

"Doors Open Toronto is an annual weekend event coordinated by the City of Toronto Culture Division. The program allows visitors free access to architecturally and/or culturally significant properties that are either not usually open to the public, or would normally charge an entrance fee. Many locations have organized guided tours, displays and activities to enrich the visitor experience. Buildings are selected based on a number of criteria developed by the City's Culture Division. The roster of buildings reflects Toronto's built heritage and cultural diversity, ranging from War of 1812-era structures to a modern mosque and environmentally progressive 'green' buildings. Our dedicated team of volunteers will be happy to assist you at all locations."

Just yesterday the world was in an anxious state in anticipation of Y2K and now in just three and a half years we will be hitting the year 2010.

And during that time Toronto has been changing from a city hidden in a cocoon to its maturity into a butterfly. A transformation has started.

Over the past seven years, Canada is the only G7 nation to run seven consecutive surplus budgets, and is the only G7 nation to run a surplus in 2004 (Source).

And Toronto as its financial capital has reaped the benefits of this economic boom.

The city is growing and becoming denser. The city is undergoing an architectural renaissance not seen in 50 years. Derelict downtown lands are becoming commmunities (i.e. King West/Liberty Village), parking lots are being converted to towers, and the city is planning for bigger and better things.

This is the first of a four part series examining what the city has planned for the year 2010. In particular we focus on the transformation that has started in the Hospitality/Hotel, Arts & Entertainment, Office/Retail and residential sectors of downtown Toronto.

The Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation (TWRC) announced yesterday the five finalists in a design competition to re-design Toronto's Central waterfront.

The finalist will be chosen on May 31, in just a little over two weeks time.

The long neglected land stretching 3.5 kilometres along the shores of Lake Ontario brims with potential that as of yet has not been realized.

Swathes of waterfront land remain underdeveloped with little pedestrian traffic, commercial storefronts or much else that make the waterfront a destination of choice (the few exceptions being the Island Ferries and Queens Quay).

Another challenge is the seperation of the waterfront from the core of the city by the Gardiner Expressway. Pedestrians must pass underneath a highway and across the wide busy Lakeshore Blvd to get to the waterfront.

Despite all this, Toronto still manages to be a beautiful city filled with multiculturalism, a thriving theatre district and entertainment district, international cuisine, and a cleanliness that most cities cannot compare to.

Just imagine if the city does embrace an intimate relationship with its waterfront. Imagine if the city decides to harness the potential, beauty and fortune to be nestled beside one of the Great Lakes. Imagine what the city would be like then.

Imagine like this:

"..a series of 100-metre-tall weather masts that sway in the water and change colour with the weather.. "
